South Africa is made up of 47 district municipalities and 6 metropolitan districts making up 53 districts. The districts are largely contained within the nine provinces (indicated by broad colour themes below) with a few cross-border districts (marked *). There is a move (2004) to adjust provincial boundaries so as to eliminate cross-border districts for practical reasons. Click on the links or map below for more info.
